The Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support Course is accredited by the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT). The course is aimed at rescue service personnel who work in the pre-hospital arena such as Fire, Police and Ambulance Services and the Private Ambulance Service Sector. It emphasises the need for a rapid assessment of the critical trauma patient, treatment of shock and hypoxaemia, and transportation to an appropriate hospital.

The PHTLS course is delivered over 2 days and educates the student in the management of trauma and the equipment that is necessary to assist in maintaining life support in the pre-hospital arena.  The course actively encourages students to share knowledge and expertise with different agencies.

PHTLS is taught in 47 countries worldwide and has an international medical faculty that oversees all aspects of clinical education ranging from tutor educational delivery through to the auditing and assessment of courses and quality assurance.  In the UK PHTLS is the Gold standard in pre-hospital trauma management.

The course builds upon each participant’s current knowledge base and skills to enhance their critical thinking and problem-solving skills, stresses teamwork between providers with diverse levels of knowledge, skills, and resources, and offers a safe environment in which students can practice trauma assessment and treatment skills.

Stressing that it’s crucial to deliver the patient 1) to the right facility 2) using the right mode of transport 3) in the right amount of time, and 4) as safely as possible, the curriculum covers the following in depth:

  • Assessment
  • Secondary survey/Reassessment

This 2-day course is a comprehensive and intensive experience designed for pre-hospital doctors, nurses, and paramedics. Students are expected to have a good level of medical knowledge prior to the course and are encouraged to read the manual before attending.

On completion of the Pre-Trauma Hospital Life Support Course (PHTLS) course students will receive a certificate from the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT).
