Our Medicine in Remote Areas (MIRA) refresher course is approved by the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh. This course has been developed for all students who currently hold a MIRA certificate from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. As with any discipline of medicine things change constantly and it is essential that all students are kept up to date, especially when managing patients in remote areas or where immediate rescue is unlikely.

The content for this course is comprehensive and covers the following:


  • Triage and crisis management
  • Patient assessment and diagnosis
  • Airway management (OPA, NPA,i-gel, LMA, and emergency airway)
  • Chest decompression
  • Chest and abdominal trauma
  • Shock, hemorrhage control (tourniquets, celox) and fluids with Lethal Triad
  • Fracture management and various splints including dislocation reduction
  • Skin issues and closure techniques
  • Medical emergencies
  • ILS
  • Extremes of weathers
  • Altitude and mountain medicine awareness
  • Drugs and pharmacology issues
  • Prolonged patient care
  • RTC extrication
  • Chemicals
  • Bites & stings (snake bites, scorpion, spiders)


Students are required to successfully pass the following assessments:


  • Written assessment
  • Practical assessments

Students will need to have a valid Medicine in Remote Areas (MIRA) certificate which is approved by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCS). If you certificate has expired already and is greater than 4 weeks, please contact us to discuss your options.

Students who successfully complete this course will be issued a Medicine in Remote Areas (MIRA) certificate from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCS) which is valid for 3 years.
